The Healthy Fat: Avocado
in The Too Busy to Diet Blog on January 17, 2016
Written by Allie McTighe, dietetic student at Miami University of Ohio: One of the current trends in nutrition is incorporating avocado into one’s diet. However, many people do not know exactly why avocado is good for you. Avocados are an excellent source of unsaturated fat, in particular monounsaturated fat, which means it is a “healthy fat.” The unsaturated fat works to help lower total and LDL (bad) cholesterol and can decrease your risk of heart disease.
I add avocado to my diet in a variety of ways. For breakfast I enjoy spreading avocado on whole-wheat toast with salt, crushed red pepper, and lemon. I also like to add avocado to my omelets. It gives the omelet the creamy consistency of cheese, which I love. Avocado is also a create spread for sandwiches. For lunch I make a sandwich on whole-wheat bread with avocado, turkey, spinach, onion, and tomato. Avocado can be added to one’s diet in several ways. Try incorporating avocado to your diet and let us know your favorite recipe!
