2016 The Year to be Healthy

Written by Allie McTighe, dietetic student at Miami University of Ohio: Who is ready to make 2016 the year to be healthy? It is hard to make the initial steps toward leading a healthier life, and many people do not know where to start. This year I have been working with my mom on starting to eat healthier. For her to have me as a partner is more motivating, because she knows that we are relying on each other to achieve our goals. We are taking small steps each week. I think it is important to set realistic goals when making a behavior change.

The first week we started by adding more vegetables to our diet. We aimed to have a two fruits or vegetables at every meal. For my mom this is a realistic goal because she usually has at least one fruit or vegetable at every meal, and we are simply just added more nutrient dense foods to her diet. A great breakfast recipe is veggie scramble with a side of fruit and avocado toast.

2 eggs ( or substitute egg whites)
1/4 cup spinach
1/4 cup tomato
sprinkle feta cheese

handful of blueberries
whole wheat toast
1/4 avocado

Exercise is an important component of leading a healthier lifestyle. We have set her goals to be to exercise three-four times a week for 30 minutes. Mother’s are constantly busy and rarely find time for themselves to be active, but when you have a goal in mind it is easier to set aside time throughout the week to complete it.

Now approaching the second week we are limiting her diet to only one soft drink a week. I found a great substitute to be soda water with added fruit, it gives the water more flavor. Eventually we hope to completely eliminate soda beverages.
