Taste the Rainbow

Written by Allie McTighe, dietetic student at Miami University of Ohio: After almost completing my third year of college at Miami University, I realized the amount of times I hear people say, how impossible it is to eat healthy on a college campus. I think that the reason college students have this mind set is because they have temptations to eat unhealthy all around them. Chicken fingers, French fries, burgers, and more are available at almost every dinning hall. However, I think that with the right mind-set and education, college students can eat healthy on campus. Fresh fruit, salad bars, grilled chicken sandwiches, stir-fry, and more are awesome options, and are available at many dinning halls. Also, I think that having healthy options at the dorm are important too. Keeping greek yogurt, granola bars (ex: LARA, and Kind bars), fresh fruit (ex: apples and bananas), hummus, and salsa, are great snacks to have easily available. I went to a speaker this week who said, to think of your diet as “eating the rainbow.” This is a great way to think about one’s diet. Variety is key! I challenge everyone and especially college students to look at their options and try to eat foods of variety, greens, bananas, oranges, whole grains, and more. And remember to taste the rainbow!
