Working Towards a Healthier Lifestyle

in The Too Busy to Diet Blog on July 13, 2015

Written by Allie McTighe, dietetic student at Miami University of Ohio: This past week my girlfriends and I had a wine and dip night. Each of us brought a small portion of our favorite homemade dip and a wine. I decided to bring my homemade guacamole. It was a big hit! The ingredients are:
2 Avocados
½ lime
1 medium tomato
½ small red onion
½ teaspoon garlic salt

This party got me thinking. Food and drinks are an important part of socializing. Throughout my education I have learned that eating habits are highly influenced by the environment surrounding you. If your family, friends, roommates, etc. eat unhealthy, you are more likely to contribute to unhealthy eating habits. So how can we stop this downward spiral? Lets start with you. You be the good example. You break those bad eating habits and influence healthy ones.

I have noticed this summer that my healthy eating habits have influenced my family to eat healthy as well. When my mom makes dinner she often tells me, “We have our whole grains, lean protein, vegetables, and fruit in our meal.” I love seeing how my education has affected my family.

Not only can we be a good example for healthy eating, but for exercise as well. Find a workout buddy. Ask your family and friends to go for a walk or run with you. Including them in on your routine will influence them to start their own workout regime. I am asking you, to be the healthy example for your friends and family. Together we can all work towards a healthier lifestyle.
