The Scale: Friend or Foe
in The Too Busy to Diet Blog on September 21, 2015
Written by RD Monica Joyce: Dread stepping on the scale? Most people do. I have a difficult time convincing my clients to weigh regularly, e.g. daily.
It is not unusual to hear, ” I’ve gained weight and didn’t even realize I was gaining.” So we know weight can sneak up on us especially during certain times of the year, like the next few months as we head into winter and holidays. Weighing keeps you accountable and lets you identify quickly the cause and effect of your eating and exercise/activity. It allows you to catch and stop weight gain with the first pound or two. A 2015 article in Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics reported an analysis of a 6 month study and found that weighing daily led to greater adoption of weight control behaviors. Those that weighed daily had a greater weight loss than those who weighed most days of the week.
My advice: Make Peace with the scale. It really is friend.
