Busy Lifestyle Makes It Hard To Eat Healthy
in The Too Busy to Diet Blog on July 23, 2013
A study conducted by Cornell University in 2009, found that work schedules were an obstacle to eating healthy. Carol Devine, lead author, reports her research in The Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior. She found that the participants in her study found that their busy schedules led to the following behaviors:
1) Skipping meals
2) Ordering take-out food on the way home from work
3) Use of quick-fix meals that are not necessarily healthy
4) Overeating after a missed meal
5) Working through lunch breaks to avoid losing wages to eat
Devine found that it is not just what we eat, but how we eat. She found that long and irregular hours tended to lead to unhealthy eating behaviors. And when families did not eat together, the quality of food served tended to be unhealthy.
Devine feels that employers need to look at work-place eating to insure that employees have access to healthy choices and time to eat.
