Are You Drinking Your Calories?

Written by RD Monica Joyce: Nestle Waters North America is the nation’s largest branded bottled water company. It has partnered with registered dietitians providing guidelines on Healthy Hydration. This is an area of nutrition that often doesn’t get as much attention as it deserves. Recent nutrition data reveals that 20% of our daily calories and nearly half of all added sugars come from beverages. Take for instance a one 12 ounce sugar-sweetened beverage contains about 10 teaspoons of sugar and the calories in liquids don’t provide fullness like the calories from food. That’s something I have always told my clients watching their weight.
Try drinking water or other zero-calories beverages such as unsweetened, sparkling, flavored water. Nestle Waters says that replacing one 12 oz. (140) calories sugar sweetened beverage with water each day would cut some 50,000 calories from the diet and more than 65 cups of sugar in one year. I’m impressed!
