Eating Healthy on Vacation

in The Too Busy to Diet Blog on March 29, 2015

Written by Allie McTighe, dietetic student at Miami University of Ohio. For spring break I was lucky enough to travel to the Bahamas. Throughout my vacation we ate at many different restaurants, Asian, Italian, American, and more. When looking at the menu I realized how tempting it is to pick unhealthy items. I found that everything comes in moderation and portion control is important. I ate at a restaurant called The Marketplace where they served buffet style. I have to say this is where portion control came into play. For breakfast they had everything you could imagine. I decided to pick the omelet bar and some fresh fruit; this would give me 5 grams of protein, fiber, and iron. I made an egg white omelet with spinach, tomatoes, onion, and green peppers. Needless to say I did not feel like I was missing out while other people enjoyed waffles. The omelet filled me up quickly and gave me energy throughout the day. The fruit hit my sweet tooth while others enjoyed pastries. I have to admit the fruit was delicious, the best fresh fruit I’ve ever had. Although it is tempting to indulge in the unhealthy options, I was able to remember some of the key nutrition tips I read in Too Busy To Diet and have learned throughout my major classes. Picking foods that are full with protein and fiber will help keep you satisfied. IMG_7010
