The Eggcellent Truth
Written by Madeline Engelking, dietetic student at Miami University of Ohio
Have you ever thought you were healthier than your peers because you ordered the egg whites instead of whole eggs to avoid all the fat and calories? Guess what? You are making the wrong choice! In recent years, many people have been ordering egg white dishes because they are afraid of fat and calories in the yolk, along with increasing their cholesterol. I personally have fallen into this trap before I did my research on all the benefits from the fat and it’s calories. What most people don’t understand is that the yolk contains essential fats and tons of B vitamins, calcium, zinc and minerals. Some others do not eat the yolk because they are afraid of the amount of cholesterol. But, cholesterol is something that will help produce vitamin D, cell membranes, and bile acids that will help you digest fat. (Lang, 2015). So this cholesterol does no harm! Another concept to understand is that just because your eating this good fat also does not mean you will get fat. Get this-our bodies need fat to burn fat! But, I am not talking about the fats in donuts, fries, and pizza that contains refined oils and simple carbs. I am talking about healthy fats in eggs, avocados, nuts, seeds, coconut oil, and organic- unpasteurized butter! The fats in these foods can provide lasting energy, reduce inflammation, are loaded with vitamins, and can also enhance your absorption of fat-soluble (DEKA) nutrients. The more healthy fats we consume, the more satisfied we feel. If we are more satisfied, we won’t keep craving more during the day.
Go out and try it. Who wouldn’t be satisfied with more fat! Swap out the huge non-fat frozen yogurt cup loaded with carbs from all the extra sugars, for a just ½ cup full-fat ice cream. It’s better for you and tastes better. Next time you go out to eat with your friends, educate them and tell them to have eggs (with yolk) packed with veggies and avocado instead of having an egg white omelet with a piece of toast. Switch out the unsatisfying carbs for the nutrient dense and satisfying fat. It won’t hurt, and I swear, eating more fat gets a little fun ☺
