May is Exercise is Medicine Month so we are going to provide you with some interesting and fun tips about exercise during the month.
Need a Pick-Me-Up
Rather than another cup of coffee or tea to feel energized how about taking the stairs? In fact, a new study supports that easy stair walking rather than drinking caffeine will have a greater affect on energy level.
This study from the Journal of Physiology and Behavior studied college women who said they were chronically sleep deprived, sleeping less than 6.5 hours a night. On separate days, they consumed capsules with 50 milligrams of caffeine
(roughly the amount in a can of soda) or placebo, or spent 10 minutes walking up and down stairs (about 30 floors) at an easy pace.
The finds were that in both the caffeine and placebo there wasn’t much change in how they felt. With exercise they felt more energetic and vigorous. The effect of exercise was immediate but short-lived.
Office workers can get a quick boost of energy and feel more motivated and refreshed by hitting the stairs during the day.
