Lifestyle Change

Written by Allie McTighe, dietetic student at Miami University of Ohio: One of the most common saying people use today is, “I need to go on a diet.” To the American people what does this really mean? From my experience so far, we use this term to indicate many things: I need to lose weight, eat healthy, exercise, get into shape, etc. However, as registered dietitians, the term means to eat healthy, exercise, and make an overall behavior change. The behavior change that comes with a diet is one that will lead people to live an overall healthier lifestyle, for the rest of their lives.

On the other hand, as a society we only think of a diet as short term, and that once we hit our desired weight, we can return back to our unhealthy eating habits. I think my challenge for us, is to think of a diet as more of a lifestyle change, as us Americans enriching our lives. For some it may be more drastic than others. For me, my goal with my healthy lifestyle is to be able to teach others how to eat healthy, and be a good role model for them to follow. What about you? What is your reason for eating healthy, working out, or losing weight? Why do you want to do this? Use this reason as your inspiration, to not only start your diet, but to make a behavior change for the rest of your life.
