Monica Joyce, Highland Park Dietitian Wins Prestigious Award

Local Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist Wins Award for Children’s Diabetes Camp
Highland Park, Il.– October 20, 2015
Monica Joyce, MS, RDN, CDE was recently recognized at the opening ceremony of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics National Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee Oct 4. Monica is the Founder and Executive Director of Slam Dunk for Diabetes a basketball camp for children ages 5 to 18 founded in 2004. Slam Dunk is the only day basketball camp for children with type1 & 2 diabetes and prediabetes. Though it targets low-income high-risk kids no child is turned away. Camp is offered at no charge each summer to as many as 200 children through private donations and corporate sponsorship. Camp is now offered in 5 cities: Chicago and Rockford, IL, Schererville, Indiana, Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Memphis, Tennessee.
Monica is a registered dietitian and a certified diabetes educator. She is the Program Director of an American Diabetes Association Recognized Program in an endocrinology practice in Chicago. She is a local and national speaker to health care professionals on diabetes and obesity. In 2013 she was recognized for Slam Dunk for Diabetes by the American Association of Diabetes Educators at the annual meeting. In 2014 she was recognized with three other dietitians by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for March National Nutrition Month theme Showcasing Our Nutrition Heroes for Slam Dunk for Diabetes.
Monica has also been featured in the Chicago Sunday Tribune’s series Remarkable Women and Diane Banks (93.9 Radio) Woman of the Week.
Monica is the author, along with colleague Jackie King from Arlington Heights of the book Too Busy to Diet. The book is a great resource that sorts through nutrition myths and fad while addressing your personal nutrition concerns. The book is designed to read like a travel book with Joyce and King serving as your guides.
Monica also wrote a children’s book called The Adventures of Annie Bananie. This true story is about a 14 year old blind poodle that outlived her owners and was looking for her forever home. It highlights the plight of the older dog that needs a home and so often is overlooked.
