Selecting a Nutrition Expert

in The Too Busy to Diet Blog on June 22, 2013

What To Look For

  1. The individual is a registered dietitian and belongs to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND). This insures that the individual has achieved extensive nutrition education, has done an (AND) approved internship, and is keeping current in nutritional science by maintaining (AND)  continuing education requirements.
  2. The nutritionist/dietitian is not selling nutrition supplements, vitamins, or special foods. If your “nutritionist” is profiting from the sale of products it is a “red flag” that they are more interested in making money than they are in your nutrition.
  3. The nutritionist/dietitian is not billing from their office for lab work. Registered dietitians cannot order laboratory work in the outpatient setting or make a diagnosis based on the results. This is the realm of the licensed physician.
  4.  The nutritionist/dietitian is not prescribing a Blood Type Diet based on your blood type. There is no scientific evidence that shows the interaction between blood type and diet having a positive or negative influence on weight or overall health.  Testing  your blood type is another quick money making scheme.
  5.  Your nutritionist/dietitian is not diagnosing candidiasis and placing you on a “Candida Diet”. Candidiasis is a bogus diagnosis that the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology regards as “speculative and unproven.
  6. *For more information on any of these points check www.quackwatch.org.  and www.mayoclinic.com/health/blood-type-diet/ANO1415 .
