Written by RD, LD, MS, CDE Monica Joyce: What a relief to hear that “feeling good” after treating a cold with a bowl of nice hot chicken soup is for real.
An article published in the November 27 Chicago Tribune and authored by Neda Frayha an internist at the University of Maryland School of Medicine discusses 5 Myths about the common cold. There are many home remedies that have come and gone but probably the one that most of us are familiar with is chicken soup. The research reports that chicken soup has an anti-inflammatory benefit which can ease cold symptoms. The ingredients in homemade chicken soup can inhibit neutrophil migration, in which special blood cells move to parts of the body that are sick ( nose and lungs) and release chemicals that lead to more inflammation. This can be helpful in fighting a short-term infection, but also cause long-term health problems if left unchecked. Chicken soup anti-inflammatory effect can make you feel better faster.

So next time you feel a cold coming on you may want to make a batch of homemade chicken soup or even better make it ahead of time and freeze. Winter has just begun.
